On July 3, 2026, Kelsey Pfendler rowed a small boat named Lily into Honolulu Harbor. Hundreds of people lined the shore chanting her name. She had been alone on the Pacific for 43 days, 17 hours and 55 minutes.
She left Monterey, California on May 21. No motor. No sail. No support boat running alongside her. Roughly 2,400 miles of open water, crossed under her own power.
She set out to become the first American woman to row solo across the mid-Pacific. She did that, and then kept going past it.
She is the third woman in history to make the crossing alone.
Roughly 4,000 calories a day, force-fed whether she wanted them or not — losing weight on the water means losing strength. Sleep in fragments, broken by wind. Blistered hands. Salt sores that required anti-chafing cream every couple of hours to keep from turning into something worse.
No shade to sit under. On an ocean rowing boat a sunshade catches wind, and anything that catches wind counts as a sail.
She rowed through all of it.
Pfendler has worked as a Grand Canyon river guide for over a decade. In 2024 she made this same Monterey-to-Hawaii run as skipper of a four-woman team, the Hericanes.
So she knew exactly what she was signing up for the second time. She went anyway, and went alone.
Every mile raised money for the Whale Foundation, which provides health and wellness services to the Grand Canyon river guiding community — her own people.
We didn't build LMTLSS around a slogan. We built it around people who decide the limit isn't real and then spend 2,400 miles proving it.
Kelsey isn't sponsored by us. She doesn't owe us anything. We're telling you about her because this is the whole point.
